Isla Holbox is a small island with plenty of nice places to eat and / or drink. Since the island is touristic and isolated, prices are slightly higher than on the mainland. But you have the advantage of eating on one of the most beautiful Mexican islands!
We stayed two days on Isla Holbox at Maria Carlota. Below you’ll find our favorite spots for food and drinks.
Table of Contents
Raices Beach Club and Marina
Raices is a beach bar and restaurant located on the Isla Holbox beach. The beach bar is known for the freshest fish on the island. There is a relaxed atmosphere and in the afternoon there’ s live music. A Sol, nachos with guac or ceviche and reggae music on the side, perfect! The prices at Raices are reasonable too.
If you want to use the sunbeds on the beach, you have to spend a certain amound on food or drinks. If you stay for a whole day, this shouldn’t be a problem! We’ve have been to Raices twice. Definitely a must! Don’t forget to watch the sunset here.
Breakfast at La Tortilleria
La Tortilleria is a small restaurant, with less than ten tables where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch. The restaurant is located on the central square in Holbox’s city center. They have, as the name implies, delicious tortillas, but also eggs and paninis. A good place to start your day at Isla Holbox.
Eating tacos at El TacoQueto
Another cheap restaurant in the center of Holbox is El TacoQueto. Again, the name tells you all you need to know about the menu. The inside of the restaurant looks like a snack bar with red plastic chairs and brightly colored tablecloths. Don’t let this fool you, because the food is awesome! Dirt cheap too. You can get tacos here, but also nachos, burritos, tortillas, quesadillas and other Mexican dishes!
Note: You may have to wait a while, as it can be very crowded. But it never takes long before you can get a spot, as people don’t stay that long.
Básico
Básico is a restaurant in a side street of the central square and is not comparable to the aforementioned restaurants and joints. Básico looks very nice and is very hip indeed. At the beach we met two employees of this restaurant who gave us their menu. Out of curiosity we took a look. The service was great and the food delicious. The prices are a tad high for the portion size. So, after our visit we got another crepe on the central square!
